Healing in Paris: A Unique Initiative Brings Joy and Recovery to Pediatric Oncology Patients

RHCC

Yasmin Nassareldin, a teenager from Northern Israel, recently returned from a transformative winter journey to Paris—one that was not just a vacation, but a crucial part of her recovery from leukemia.

The Association of Friends of Rambam in France (AFHORA) has partnered with Rambam for a unique initiative to provide pediatric oncology patients from the Ruth Rappaport Children's Hospital with short-term stays in Paris. The goal is simple yet profound: to offer young patients a “break of happiness” by allowing them to momentarily step away from the rigors of chemotherapy and embrace the joy of exploration.

At just 19, Yasmin from Daliyat al-Karmel, Israel, has been courageously battling leukemia, enduring the relentless cycle of treatments at Rambam. But for a few unforgettable days, she traded hospital corridors for the enchanting streets of Paris, stepping into a world far removed from medical treatment. This wasn’t just a vacation—it was a rare chance to reclaim joy, adventure, and a sense of freedom. Through the art, history, and magic of the City of Lights, Yasmin proved that even in the face of illness, happiness can shine through.

“Yasmin recently completed a round of treatments, and since her health allowed, she traveled to Paris with her father as AFHORA’s guest,” says Dr. Moniq Perez, an attending physician at Rambam’s Joan and Sanford Weill Division of Pediatric Hematology Oncology. “During her stay, she visited the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, and EuroDisney—experiencing the magic of the city in a way that is much more than just a trip abroad. This initiative has a real therapeutic impact, enhancing emotional well-being, reducing fatigue, and even improving physical health metrics.”

Looking back on her trip, Yasmin is filled with deep appreciation. “It was simply a dream. I have no words,” she says. “The trip was amazing, and the highlight was visiting EuroDisney. The experience brought me so much joy and energy—I felt truly happy.”

With AFHORA’s support, young patients can take a break from the hospital and immerse themselves in adventure before returning to Israel with renewed strength and resilience to continue their battle against cancer. Rambam embraces a holistic healing approach, recognizing that true recovery extends beyond medical treatment to support both patients and their families.
