Rambam Health Care Campus is a 1,100-bed world-class teaching hospital and Level-1 trauma center. As the major referral center for the 2.5 million residents of Northern Israel, Rambam serves a diverse patient population—including referrals from 12 district hospitals, defense and peacekeeping forces, and patients from across Israel, the Mediterranean region, and around the world. The hospital provides care across every medical discipline through advanced, specialized facilities located across its campus.

 

As a national strategic security asset, Rambam maintains constant preparedness to address public health challenges in both peacetime and wartime—responding to conventional and unconventional threats, as well as mass casualty events, at a moment’s notice.

 

A cornerstone of this preparedness is Rambam’s Fortified Underground Emergency Hospital—the largest facility of its kind. Established in 2014, this three-level, 1,500-car parking lot can be rapidly converted into a 2,000-bed, state-of-the-art underground hospital. It is fully equipped to deliver advanced medical care, protect patients and staff, and meet critical needs during national emergencies.

 

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the underground hospital was activated to safely isolate and treat infected patients.

 

Following the events of October 7 and amid escalating attacks from Hezbollah in Lebanon, the facility was activated once again. Within hours—while under rocket fire—the war-injured and hundreds of patients from every department were safely transferred below ground, ensuring both their protection and the continuity of critical medical care.
